What Does It Mean to “Live on Mission” for Jesus?
In today’s fast-paced world of work, school, errands, and constant notifications, it’s easy to compartmentalize our faith. We attend church, perhaps serve or participate in a group, and then return to our daily lives during the week.
But Jesus didn’t call us to fit Him into our schedule—He called us to follow Him with our whole lives. That’s what it means to live on mission. Living on mission for Jesus means seeing every part of life—your home, your job, your neighborhood, your hobbies—as a place where God can work through you. It’s not just about doing ministry at church; it’s about being a representative of Christ wherever you are.
How Is This Different from “Normal” Christian Life?
You might wonder, Isn’t this just what being a Christian is?
Yes—and yet, many of us live as if missions is for the professionals: pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. The difference in missional living is intentionality.
A faithful Christian might live with integrity but not always see their daily interactions as spiritual opportunities.
A missional Christian steps into the same spaces, with a gospel mindset, looking for how God might use them.
It’s not about adding more to your already full life. It’s about living your current life with a clear sense of purpose in Christ.
Does This Really Work in Everyday Life?
Yes. Across Indiana, we see families and individuals choosing to live this way—quietly, faithfully, right where God has placed them.
A Family’s Story: Living on Mission in the Everyday
Consider a family with young children and full-time jobs. Life was busy, just like yours. But they started praying together: “God, help us be a light on our street.” That one prayer changed everything.
They made a slight but intentional shift—spending more time in their front yard instead of the back. They lingered after school pickups. They started learning their neighbors’ names. When someone mentioned a hardship, they offered to pray and followed up on it. Over time, simple hospitality—such as sharing a meal, inviting someone to church, or asking thought-provoking questions—opened doors to deeper conversations.
They didn’t host a revival or start a nonprofit. They decided that their everyday lives could be lived with a gospel purpose.
One of them said, “We stopped waiting for a mission trip. We realized we were already on one.”
What the Bible Says About Living on Mission
God’s Word is clear—we are all sent:
John 20:21 – “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
2 Corinthians 5:20 – “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.”
Matthew 5:14–16 – “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others.”
Colossians 4:5–6 – “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders… let your speech always be gracious.”
Living missionally is not a special assignment for a few—it’s the daily calling of every believer.
Answering Common Objections
“I’m too busy.”
Living on mission doesn’t mean adding more to your plate. It means being purposeful in what you’re already doing. Waiting for soccer practice? Talk to another parent. Grabbing coffee at work? Ask a co-worker how they’re really doing.
“I’m not trained.”
You don’t need a seminary degree to show the love of Jesus. Just be willing, prayerful, and available.
“What if I mess up?”
You will. And that’s okay. God uses ordinary, imperfect people. Your job is to be faithful—He’ll handle the rest.
Practical Ways to Live on Mission
Pray for the people around you. Start with your neighbors, co-workers, or classmates. Pray by name.
Be present and available. Don’t rush past people. Ask questions. Listen well.
Open your home. Invite someone over for a meal or a cup of coffee.
Find shared rhythms. Look for ways to build regular connections, such as walking the dog, volunteering, or attending local events.
Share your story. When the opportunity arises, talk about how Jesus has changed your life.
Let’s Be a Fellowship on Mission
At Crossroads Fellowship, we believe every believer is called to live on mission—not just pastors, not just churches, but you. Right where you live. Right in your season of life. Right now.
Imagine the impact if believers across Indiana began to live with this kind of purpose. Neighborhoods would be different. Workplaces would feel different. Families would be transformed.
It starts with a simple prayer:
“Jesus, I’m Yours. Use me today.”
What’s Your Next Step?
It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Just intentional. Maybe it’s inviting someone over. Perhaps it’s time to start praying for your street. Maybe it’s reaching out to someone who’s been on your heart.
Whatever it is—do it. Jesus is already at work around you. Join Him.
